A Leather Artist with recent experience is needed in Johnson County| $17 per hour | 1st shift


Job Summary:

A Leather Artist specializes in designing, crafting, and finishing high-quality leather goods using traditional and modern techniques. This role involves cutting, tooling, dyeing, stitching, and assembling leather pieces to create unique and durable products such as wallets, belts, bags, saddles, and decorative artwork.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and create leather goods based on customer requests, trends, or personal artistic vision.

  • Utilize various leatherworking techniques, including tooling, carving, embossing, dyeing, and stitching.

  • Select and source high-quality leather materials and hardware.

  • Customize and personalize leather pieces through engraving, painting, or burning.

  • Repair and restore damaged or vintage leather items.

  • Operate and maintain leatherworking tools and machinery, such as sewing machines, stamping tools, and cutting devices.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, new materials, and emerging techniques.

  • Manage client communications, take custom orders, and ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Price, market, and sell handmade leather goods through online platforms, craft fairs, or retail shops.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong craftsmanship skills with attention to detail and design aesthetics.

  • Experience with leather cutting, stitching (hand and machine), and finishing techniques.

  • Knowledge of different types of leather and their applications.

  • Creativity and artistic ability for unique, high-quality designs.

  • Basic business and marketing skills for independent artisans.

  • Ability to work independently or collaborate with other artisans and designers.

Work Environment:

Leather Artists may work in a personal studio, workshop, or collaborative maker space. The role may involve exposure to dyes, adhesives, and cutting tools, requiring proper safety precautions. Some Leather Artists also travel to trade shows, fairs, and exhibitions to showcase and sell their work.
